International Measuring System of Units by Country

This map shows international measuring system of units and the chronology of the advance of metric usage around the world.

Only three countries - Burma, Liberia, and the United States - have yet to adopt the International System of Units as their official system of measurement (weights and measures). Although use of the metric system has been sanctioned by law in the US since 1866, it has been slow in displacing the American adaptation of the British Imperial System known as the US Customary System. The US is the only industrialized nation that does not mainly use the metric system in its commercial and standards activities, but there is increasing acceptance in science, medicine, government, and many sectors of industry.

Note:

Adoption of the metric system by the various countries, or metrication, is shown by year on the map. France is the first country officially adopted the metric system in 1795.

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are people or groups of individuals who have been forced to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of, or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural- or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an international border.

An asylum-seeker is an individual who has sought international protection and whose claim for refugee status has not yet been determined. It is important to note, however, that a person is a refugee from the moment he/she fulfils the criteria set out the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The formal recognition of someone, for instance through individual refugee status determination (RSD), does not establish refugee status, but confirms it.

Contrary to the widespread perception that industrialized countries are hosting the bulk of the world's refugees, the available statistical evidence demonstrates that most refugees remain in their region of origin and flee to neighbouring countries.

It is generally understood that countries with strong economies are more likely to be capable of absorbing refugees. By comparing the refugee population with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (PPP) per capita of a country, a measure can be obtained of the relative impact of hosting refugees. If the number of refugees per 1 USD GDP (PPP) per capita is high, the relative contribution and effort made by countries compared to the national economy can be considered as high. Among the 25 countries with the highest number of refugees per 1 USD GDP per capita, all are developing countries, including 15 Least Developed Countries.

Pakistan was hosting the highest number of refugees compared to its national economy. As such, it hosted 733 refugees per 1 USD GDP (PPP) per capita. The Democratic Republic of the Congo was second with 496 refugees per 1 USD GDP (PPP) per capita, followed by the United Republic of Tanzania (262), the Syrian Arab Republic (257), and Chad (230). The first developed country is Germany at 26th place with 16 refugees per 1 USD GDP (PPP) per capita.

Refugees leave their country because they have no other choice and fear for their own life or safety or that of their family. Refugees also flee their country when their government will not or cannot protect them from serious human rights abuses.

Pakistan is host to the largest number of refugees worldwide (1.8 million), followed by the Syrian Arab Republic (1.1 million) and the Islamic Republic of Iran (980,000).

What is Refugees?

Refugees include individuals recognized under the 1951 UN Convention/1967 Protocol, the 1969 OAU Convention, in accordance with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Statute, persons granted a complementary form of protection and those granted temporary protection. In the absence of Government estimates, UNHCR has estimated the refugee population in 24 industrialized countries based on 10 years of individual refugee recognition.

Dependency ratio may theoretically vary between 0% and 100%. A country with a dependency ratio equal to 0% does not receive any water from neighbouring countries. A country with a dependency ratio equal to 100% receives all its renewable water from upstream countries, without producing any of its own. This indicator does not consider the possible allocation of water to downstream countries.
